“You just left. And kept Luke a secret.”

Emma swallowed hard. “I meant to tell you. I meant to before I went into labor. I meant to that first Christmas, his first birthday, every holiday and birthday after that. I have a shoebox full of letters I wrote you, talking about Luke and how he was growing up, pages filled with me trying to explain, trying to say I was sorry.” She shook her head. “I should have told you.”

Heartbeats passed, gave space for his thoughts, the emotions he couldn’t begin to identify that were swirling around inside him. “You told me now, though. You came here now.”

      “I did.”

      “Why?”

“Because I knew I could count on you. Someone is after me. If something happens to me...I need to know Luke is safe and taken care of. I get that what I did, keeping him from you, is unforgivable. So while I’d love to have your forgiveness, I’m not asking for it. All I want from you is for you to help me keep my son safe. And if I can’t take care of him anymore, if something happens to me—”

“I’m not going to let it.”

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

      Dear Reader,

Thanks for reading Emma and Tyler’s story! I enjoyed being back at Moose Haven Lodge and getting to share my favorite state, Alaska, with you again through fiction!

Emma and Tyler were a unique set of characters for me to write, especially because of their past relationship. It was amazing as I tried to get into their heads to see the struggles they would have gone through, and how deep the wounds they’d inflicted on each other were, to realize how much many people may feel like the two of them did. Though it was difficult in some ways, I enjoyed writing their story, and loved seeing how through fiction God reminded me about second chances and forgiveness. If you identified with either of the characters or their struggle, I hope God uses this book to speak to you about forgiveness, as well, and reminds you of his grace.

As always, I love to hear from readers! You can find me on Facebook.com/sarahvarlandauthor, where I post writing news and lots of Alaska photos, or you can email me at [email protected].

P.S. If you’re ever planning a trip to Alaska, let me know! I love helping people come up with ideas for things to visit as it’s a huge state and there’s always something new to see. Hint: if you come visit, you can see the town
