      About the Author

A former Alabama State Trooper, Air Force veteran and international speaker, Orrin “Checkmate” Hudson is a two-time World Open Speed chess champion who realized he could use his chess skills to make a difference in the world. Remembering his own troubled youth served as an incentive to have an impact on young lives, Orrin translated the basics of the game -think strategically, plan effectively, there are consequences for every action – to both build self-confidence and teach life lessons to youngsters, many of whom who could be called “at-risk.”

Focusing his talents on children, he formed Be Someone, (www.besomeone.org,) a nonprofit organization through which he and others help children believe in themselves. The organization has positively influenced more than 20,000 youth since its inception in 2001.

Due to his enormous success, his work has been featured nationally on CNN, Good Morning America, CBS Early Morning Show, People Magazine, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Time Magazine for Kids and USA Today. Comedian Steve Harvey often invites Orrin to be a prime participant in his mentoring weekends designed to empower youth. His work is also the subject of an upcoming movie.

Orrin lives in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He is the father of seven children, 3 living in Birmingham and 4 in Atlanta.
