       Title Page:

Ford’s 1965 289 High Performance V-8 yielding 271 hp at 6,000 rpm was unavailable with automatic transmission until 1966. Most were fitted with the cast-iron Ford Top Loader 4-speed transmission.

       Back Cover Photos

       Top:

This is the Mexican block’s wider 15/16-inch main cap, which closely resembled the 289 High Performance main cap. Mexican blocks received wider main caps for durability in unimproved road conditions.

       Middle

The three-bolt harmonic dampener (left) was used prior to 1970. Beginning in 1970, Ford went to a four-bolt dampener (right) on all V-8 engines. Small-block balancers vary in width and markings depending on the engine they’re intended for. Beginning in December 1982, the 28-ounce offset balance was changed to 50 ounces to accommodate greater reciprocating weight in the 5.0L High Output engine.

       Bottom Left:

A closer look at the 1975 351W head casting shows the “WCP” and “351” markings. When shopping for 351W cylinder heads, it is important to focus on 1969–1974 castings with the 60-cc chamber and 1.840/1.540-inch valves. By 1978, the 351W head was nothing more than a 302 casting with smaller 1.780/1.450-inch valves. A popular misconception is that the 351W head has larger ports; however, port sizing is actually the same as the 289/302’s. Only the valves are larger through 1977.

       Bottom Right:

The venerable Autolite 4100 4-barrel carburetor was produced from 1957 to 1966. Like its 2100 2-V corporate sibling, the 4100 is a simple atomizer you can pop the air horn off of right on top of the engine. The 4100 was fitted with an exhaust heat-sensitive automatic choke as on the 2100. The 289 High Performance 4100 had an automatic choke until 1964 when Ford went to a manual choke for easier cold starting.
