Designing the house to suit his own lifestyle, Jim Thompson departed from the Thai tradition of placing the entrance stairway on the outside of the house. Instead, he incorporated a two-storey, western-style entrance lobby inside his Thai house, complete with a marble floor and a grand staircase leading to the upper reception and living rooms. The figure in the niche opposite the staircase is a Burmese gong carrier.
