DRIVING | DAS FAHREN
Germany has an excellent motorway system free of charge, and there is no speed limit. Be aware, though, that there are often temporary speed restrictions which must be respected. Also, be careful when you overtake that the way is clear, as there may be another car coming up behind you at high speed. You must then swing back into the right-hand lane as soon as possible.

YOU SHOULD KNOW…
Speed limits on German roads go by kmph, not mph. In dry weather, the limits are 50 kmph (31 mph) in built-up areas and 100 kmph (62 mph) on two-lane highways (unless otherwise indicated). There are no speed limits other than temporary ones on dual carriageways and motorways, but note that 130 kmph is the recommended top speed. In some places, there may be speed limits in wet weather (“bei Nässe”).
