hearing in the prison of the works of Christ, sending by his disciples, 11:3said to him, Are you he that was coming, or look we for another? 11:4And Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John what you see and hear; 11:5the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news preached to them; 11:6and blessed is he that is not offended with me.
2 11:7And when they had gone, Jesus began to say to the multitudes, concerning John, What went you out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 11:8But what went you out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? Behold, they that wear fine clothes are in the houses of kings. 11:9But what went you out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 11:10For this is he of whom it is written; Behold, I send my messenger before your face, to prepare your way before you. 11:11I tell you truly, there has not arisen among those born of woman a greater than John the Baptist; but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 11:12And from the days of John the Baptist till now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 11:13For all the prophets and the law prophesied till John. 11:14And if you will receive it, this is Elijah, who was to come.
3 11:15He that has ears, let him hear. 11:16To what shall I liken this generation? It is like little children sitting in the markets, who call to their companions, 11:17and say, We have played on pipes for you, and you have not danced; we have mourned, and you have not lamented. 11:18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon; 11:19the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a glutton, and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her children.
4 11:20Then he began to rebuke those cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they changed not their minds. 11:21Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works which have been done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have changed their minds long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 11:22But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in a day of judgment than for you. 11:23And you, Capernaum, which are exalted even to heaven, shall go down even to hades; for if the mighty works which have been done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 11:24But I tell you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in a day of judgment, than for you.
5 11:25At that time Jesus answering said, I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and intelligent, and hast revealed them to babes. 11:26Yes, Father, for so it has seemed good in thy sight. 11:27All things are given me by my Father; and no one knows the Son but the Father; and no one knows the Father but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. 11:28Come to me all you that labor hard and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 11:29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest for your souls; 11:30for my yoke is easy, and my burden light.
CHAPTER IX.
CHRIST'S DOCTRINE OF THE SABBATH.
1 12:1AT that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the sabbath; and his disciples were hungry, and began to pick the heads and eat. 12:2And the Pharisees seeing it, said to him, Behold, your disciples do what it is not lawful to do on the sabbath. 12:3But he said to them, Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him? 12:4how he entered into the house of God and eat the show bread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those with him, but only for the priests? 12:5Or have you not read in the law, that the priests profane the sabbath in the temple, and are blameless? 12:6But I tell you that here is an object greater than the temple. 12:7But if you had known what, I wish for mercy and not a sacrifice, means, you would not have condemned the innocent; 12:8for the Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.
2 12:9And departing thence he went into their synagogue, 12:10and behold a man having a withered hand [was there]. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath? that they might accuse him. 12:11And he said to them, What man is there of you having one sheep, who if this falls into a pit on the sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12:12How much then is a man better than a sheep! So that it is lawful to do good on the sabbath. 12:13Then he said to the man, Stretch out your hand; and he stretched it out, and it was restored as sound as the other; 12:14and the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him to destroy him.
3 12:15But Jesus knowing it departed thence, and great multitudes followed him; and he cured them all, 12:16and charged them not to make him known; 12:17that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying; 12:18Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my spirit on him, and he shall declare judgment to the nations. 12:19He shall not strive nor cry aloud, nor shall any one hear his voice in the streets. 12:20A bruised reed shall he not break, and a smoking flax shall he not extinguish, till he sends forth judgment to victory. 12:21And in his name shall nations hope.
CHAPTER X.
CHRIST'S MIRACLES ATTRIBUTED TO DEMONS. HIS RELATIONS.
1 12:22THEN a blind and dumb demoniac was brought to him, and he cured him, so that the blind and dumb spoke and saw. 12:23And all the multitudes wondered and said, Is this the Son of David? 12:24But the Pharisees hearing it, said, This man does not cast out demons, except by Beelzebul, a ruler of the demons. 12:25But knowing their thoughts, he said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed; and no city or house divided against itself can stand. 12:26If Satan casts out Satan he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 12:27And if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 12:28But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 12:29Or how can one enter into the house of a strong man and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.
2 12:30He that is not with me is against me, and he that gathers not with me scatters. 12:31Therefore, I tell you, every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but the blasphemy of the Spirit shall not be forgiven men. 12:32And if one speaks a word against the Son of man it shall be forgiven him; but if one speaks against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven him either in this life or in that to come. 12:33Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 12:34Offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 12:35The good man, out of his good treasury, casts forth good things; and the evil man, out of his evil treasury, casts forth evil things. 12:36But I tell you, that for every idle word which men speak they shall render an account in a day of judgment; 12:37for by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.
3 12:38Then answered some of the scribes and Pharisees, saying, Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you. 12:39But he
