Существует значительный объём исследований правового статуса животных. Гораздо меньше исследований публикуется по более общему и комплексному вопросу о правовом статусе всех нечеловеческих сущностей, где животные рассматривались бы наряду с другими нечеловеческими сущностями, такими как природа или отдельные природные объекты (реки, моря, горы и т. д.), Земля, Вселенная, искусственный интеллект (ИИ) и, возможно, какими-то гипотетическими сущностями, ещё не известными нам.
Есть мнение, что такие исследования могли бы не только помочь человечеству извлечь из них дополнительную выгоду за счёт из синергетического эффекта использования результатов и решений для различных сущностей, но и лучше увидеть особенности и рамки изучаемых нами феноменов и подходов прежде, чем мы расширим те или иные этические и правовые концепции на более широкий круг сущностей. Это позволило бы выявить факторы, влияющие и, возможно, предопределяющие статус всякой сущности, а также повысило бы наши шансы разработать более компактную модель регулирования его статуса.
