in many long and heartfelt discussions.
Tim and Sally already lived in what to many of us seemed like the perfect little community for surviving a potentially tumultuous transition, so their interest in moving was intriguing. Blue Heron Farms was a few miles outside the small progressive burg of Pittsboro, North Carolina (more on this in Chapter 9) and was comprised of an eclectic mix of individuals who were living in and/or building thoughtful alternative homes around a mix of open fields and woods. As Rebekah and I pondered a move away from our isolation, we were fortunate to have this interesting example to provoke our thoughts. How many people would it take to build a sustainable town? Was building a town from scratch even something I thought was a good idea? It seemed obvious that Blue Heron had a long way to go in adding community members (above its two dozen or so) if it ever hoped to achieve some notion of independence.
