“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”
William Arthur Ward
I AM SO DEEPLY grateful to so many people for had it not been for their positive influence this book would surely have never been born. To start, I would like to thank Dr. Robert Holden for his belief in me. I don't think he realizes how much it has meant to have his support—a man that I deeply admire and respect. Thank you, Robert, for showing me that I can just “Be Happy.”
My heartfelt thanks also go out to all the contributors in this book. To His Holiness the Dalai Lama for his kindness and to two members of his office staff, Rinchen Dhondrub and Tenzin Choejor, for allowing me to reprint such a powerful message. Your Holiness the Dalai Lama, your words of wisdom have filled my heart with countless joy.
To the beautiful Debbie Gisonni, you've helped people across the globe live happier and healthier lives. Thank you from the depths of my heart.
To my wonderful friend Geri Jewell, words could never express how happy I am that you came into my life. I am and always will be your biggest fan.
I've known Sue Hershkowitz-Coore for many years now yet she never ceases to amaze me. Sue, you are such a blessing. I don't know what I'd do without you. Your contagious enthusiasm continues to lift my soul.
Marci Shimoff, thank you for teaching me how to be “Happy for No Reason.” You are awesome! I am so grateful to you for your support and don't know how I will ever repay you. Also, thank you, Shelly Roby, for staying on top of things. Your help was very much appreciated.
And to the many happiness boosters in my life, my mother and father for giving me the courage to just be me. To my wonderful family and friends, without you, there would be no basis for this book. I love you all.
Erica and Lia, my two beautiful daughters, you are the best gifts life has ever given me. And to John, my wonderful husband, you are my heart and soul.
Lastly, in loving memory of my wonderful godmother Lucy Lobrace. I love you and miss you.
Foreword
HERE'S HOW I FEEL about Josie Varga: I believe Josie is an angel who has taken human form, and a particular one at that, so as to teach us the art of true self-acceptance and happiness.
Josie is an important teacher in my life. Many of her teachings are to be found in the pages of this book, but most of all they are in the example of how she lives. I only have to think of Josie, the challenges she has faced, and the way she lives her days, to receive an instant “spirit boost.” Josie helps me to remember the real truth of who I am, what real happiness is, and what is truly important in my life.
Josie Varga's life story will get your attention. On the face of it, Josie has a lot of reasons to be unhappy. Indeed, she has faced a lot of unhappiness in her past. From the moment she was born, Josie has had to face a catalogue of challenges including disability, rejection, discrimination, and abuse. In facing her unhappiness with courage and honesty, Josie has found true happiness.
In Josie's words, “this book is not
