achieve the outcome we want. (Of course, knowing what outcome we want and being able to define it clearly - so that we might recognise when we achieve it - is fundamental).

      Consultants that understand these principles can be very skillful at spotting things that many others might miss. More importantly, they will be more effective at making sensible recommendations (or ‘interventions’) as to what elements to change that will have the best likelihood of success.

      We’ve already covered some of the core principles of systems thinking including elements, interconnections, interrelationships and emergence.

      In the next section, we’ll explore the idea of purpose from a systems perspective and look at some of the characteristics of a system. You’ll soon be able to gain some valuable insights into real, every-day problems and challenges that surround you.
