      Leaders & Advocates— Their Stories

      In Part II, we present 13 leader/advocate profiles selected by our Academy of Advisors (see Chapter 1 to review the selection process). The leaders/advocates emerge through their stories as distinct individuals, but we have asked the mentees to use the same structure in each chapter to help you grasp the depth and breadth of their stories. Each chapter begins with an introduction written by the mentee who interviewed the leader/advocate and wrote the story. Leaders/advocates reviewed this text before submission to the book editors. The journeys of the leaders/advocates are described beginning with their early years and tracing their career path. In most of the profiles, the leaders/advocates reveal pivotal moments in their career and discuss points of pride. This is followed by a description of their leadership and advocacy philosophies and practices, including how they developed over time. Finally, the leaders/advocates offer their views on the future of counseling and provide words of wisdom gleaned from their personal and professional experiences. Mentees present their final reflections at the end of the chapter, sharing what they learned from the process of collaborating with their mentor through their interviews and writing about their mentor’s journey.

      Each individual’s story is unique, and you will discover that there are many diverse paths to leadership and advocacy in the counseling profession. We hope you find these profiles engaging and inspiring and that you see yourself in elements of their stories.
