9 Ich möchte diesen langwierigen Prozess nicht allzu sehr vereinfachen. Er begann damit, dass sieben große Hollywoodstudios von der Kartellaufsicht die Ausnahmeerlaubnis bekamen, die sogenannte Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) zu gründen, um einen branchenweiten Standard für Digitalformate zu entwickeln. Eines der Hauptmerkmale des Umstiegs auf Digitalprojektion bestand in der Institution des sogenannten Digital Cinema Package (DCP). Dieses beinhaltet eine Abgabe für Digitalfilme, die Virtual Print Fee (VPF), die den Kinobetreibern Entschädigungen und Subventionen von den Verleihern zusicherte, da letztere die Hauptprofiteure des Umstiegs auf Digitalkopien (d. h. auf Mobilfestplatten gespeicherte Filmdateien) waren.
