the plates (…). On one trip I was half way down the long narrow passage when a German officer started to come in the passage from the roadway. He told me to go back so that he could pass up the passageway without the plates that were still dripping acid splashing his very highly polished boots. The plates were very heavy, so I did not feel like retreating back up the passage. I told him to pass me and I did try not to let the wet plates touch his boots but my hand slipped and one of the plates did touch his boots. He went mad, and like all the so-called master race, he started to shout in English, but mostly German. Curly came along (his mother was German so he spoke German like a native). He tried to calm the officer down who was still shouting and laying down the law to me. Curly translated what the officer was going on about. He told me that he would have me arrested the next time I caused any trouble and if his high boots were damaged I would have to pay for a new pair (…). Curly told me later (…) that the officer was Baron von Aufsess (…). I was only just over 15 years old at this date and thought what a bully this Baron was, and made a note in my mind to remember his face and keep out of his way.«104 Der Wahrheitsgehalt dieser Geschichte lässt sich heute nicht mehr überprüfen. The next time I saw this German baron was in January 1944 we were up Westmount and in passing helped an old couple to cut the branch off a pine tree. A German staff car pulled up and out came two officers, one of them was the German Baron von Aufsess. We made a run for it up towards the old football field. As we looked back we saw the Baron was taking the old couple’s identity cards away from them.«105
